The photographs were probably taken in Jedda by Snouck Hurgronje between 1884 and 1885. The negatives had handwork applied. The original background has been substituted completely in one portrait, while in the remaining images the pilgrims are photographed in a courtyard-like space with foliage visible in the background. The man on the left is described as an Arab from Hadhramaut (a region in South Arabia, mostly in present-day eastern Yemen, and part in Western Oman and Southern Saudi Arabia, who lived in Pontianak. They sit face forward on foldable chairs, looking towards the camera. The photograph was taken by Snouck Hurgronje in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885.
