Show moreThe photograph, taken from the sea, actually shows the Beit al Ajaib (House of Wonders), built in 1883 and restored after the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896. The house was primarily the Sultan's residence and was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity, as well as the first building in East Africa to have a lift. The Sultan's Palace (also known as "Beit el-Sahel"), was another palace that housed the royal family built in the late 19th century and it is to the left of the main building depicted in the picture.
