Show moreThe album collects portraits of men and women from various ethnic groups of the Northern Caucasus, such as Imeritians, Lezgins, Nogais, Circassians, Kurds, Khevsurs, Ossetians, Mingrelians, Karachays, Kabardians, and Abazins. Most of the scenes were taken in Georgia, especially in the Kakheti and Gurian region, as well as in the region of Kuba and in Vladikavkaz. Most of the time "auls" - that is villages - are depicted. Portraits show noblemen and noblewomen, families, mothers with child, military officers, and people performing everyday activities such as laundering, bread baking, carrying wine jars or looming traditional dresses, as well as musicians. In this, the third edition, the woodcuts of the former editions have been replaced by steel engravings. The subject of the Tabernacle in the wilderness is initially considered in the form of a series of questions, which the author answers with quotations from the Bible. The book offers guidance to moral conduct and advice on how to value material objects, and gives an overview of spiritual teachings concerning sin and atonement.
