Show morePlates depict landscapes and architectural and street views of Constantinople and the Bosphorus. Album of watercolor views taken by the album retracing the journey of Émilien Frossard, the pastor of the Reformed Church and draftsman Pyrenees, who was appointed to organize the Protestant chaplaincy service for the soldiers of the Armée d’Orient, the unit of the French Army unit sent by Napoleon III (r. 1852-1870) to the Crimean War, the military conflict fought from 1853 to 1856, between Russia and the alliance made up of the Ottoman Empire, the United Kingdom, Sardinia, and France. The war was one of the first to be documented extensively in written reports and photographs. The album contains panoramic views of the Mediterranean coasts (Sardinia, Calabria, Stromboli, Athens, the Dardanelles, Sevastopol) from the boat he had embarked on. The album offers beautiful views of Constantinople. Frossard had remained there a few weeks to organize the Protestant chaplaincy service in various French hospitals that he visited (the wounded who could not be evacuated to France remained at the back of these hospitals). During his stay, he took the time to observe the magnificent landscapes and drew sketches and watercolors. There is also a series of more military-inspired watercolors, Pastor lying in an operation theatre, stranded boats in the bay of Balaklava, drawings of fortifications, trenches, big batteries, plans, and camps. This original album of watercolors is assimilated with the book «Letters to the East» published in correspondence of the author’s impressions and descriptions (written in Constantinople and Sebastopol) during the Crimean War in 1855. Show morePlates include views of Constantinople and its surroudings, some costume subjects and, curiously enough, various forms of Turkish transport by Jean Brindesi, an Italian painter who worked primarily as a watercolour artist in Istanbul, during the Abdul-Majid period (1831-1861). He worked on scenes involving Ottoman soldiers. Two albums of lithographs after his drawings were produced by Lemercier in Paris: Elbicei Atika – Musee des Anciens Costumes Turcs de Constantinople, 1855, and Souvenirs de Constantinople, 1860; these two works are collections of picturesque views of the city of Constantinople. The originals are kept at the Istanbul Topkapı Palace Museum and at the University of Istanbul. While the first album represents the government and military dignitaries, the second one captures the atmosphere of day-to-day life in Istanbul through quaint and lively depictions. Title from item, date devised. Oblong folio, no letterpress, tinted lithograph title + 20 tinted lithograph plates printed in colours, original purple decorative cloth gilt, purple leather backstrip. Show moreJean Cocteau was a French poet, painter and filmmaker. This drawing was probably a preparatory work for the decoration of the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Jérusalem (Our Lady of Jerusalem), a Catholic chapel of the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon. At the origin of the chapel is Louis Martinon, a banker from Nice who wanted a private chapel for the inhabitants of the Tour de Mare district of Fréjus, a 1,200-hectare housing estate that he imagined as an "ideal city" to house a population of artists. In 1962, Martinon commissioned Jean Cocteau to design the decoration of the chapel. Cocteau was assisted by the architect Jean Triquenot, painter Raymond Moretti and ceramist Roger Pelissier. The foundation stone was laid on 24 February 1963 but the unexpected death of the poet on 11 October 1963 interrupted the work. Cocteau's adopted son Édouard Dermit transferred on the cement walls the 150 sketches left by Cocteau and realized the frescoes with the help of charcoal and oil color pencils. Show moreViews of Palestine, mostly taken in Jerusalem, including market scenes, animals (camels, donkeys), encampments and buildings. There are portraits of children, women, religious figures, Arabs and Jewish types, young and old men performing their daily life activities and Westerns, possibly Nadar's traveling companions, yet to be identified. One photograph of Mar Saba Monaster in Hebron. Photographs are not staged, people are not orientalist figures, but on the contrary, they feature directly, looking into the camera. Whether they are caught working or posing for the photographer, their attitude shows a natural curiosity. In the fall of 1892, Paul Nadar traveled to Palestine to cover the inauguration of the railway connecting Jerusalem to Jaffa, together with the archaeologist Albert Tissandier, Mr. Sauvage, mining engineer, and Mr. Geiser, director of the Polytechnic School of Zurich. His work on the railroad line lasted only a few days, but he took advantage of his trip to go on the traditional "Grand Tour" visiting Alexandria, Cairo, Beirut, Tyr and Zion, and Damascus, as well as stopping in Greece and Constantinople on his way home. He used a Kodak N ° 2 camera which produces circular format views, as during his trip to Turkestan in 1890. Jerusalem [?]. Hebron. Mar Saba Monastery. Street scenes. Shops. Hose rider. Jewish types.
