Show more"The story of the English occupation of Tangier in the reign of Charles II is to be found among hundreds of contemporary documents and letters, most of which have never been published. By far the most important source of information is the large collection of official correspondence preserved at the Public Record Office , under the heading "Colonial Office, 279", which contains many letters and reports written by the English Governors of Tangier between 1662-1684. The present work is based principally on these manuscript letters, from which a number of extracts are printed. Of many other valuable authorities, the most interesting, perhaps is a journal written at Tangier by John Luke [...] this journal, which gives many details concerning social life, is, so far as I can ascertain, generally known" -- from Preface (p. vii). 1. The acquisition of Tangier - 1661 --- 2. The arraival of the English - 1662 --- 3. The enemies of Tangiers - 1663 --- 4. The earl of Teviot - 1664 --- 5. The position of Tangier before and during the Dutch war - 1664-1667 --- 6. Tangier and the Moors - 1665-1670 --- 7. The civil government of Tangier - 1668-1673 --- 8. The pirates of Algiers - 1667-1679 --- 9. Lord Inchiquin and Sir palmes Fairborne - 1675-1679 --- 10. The siege of Tangier - 1680 --- 11. Colonel Kirke and Mulia Ismail - 1681 --- 12.
