Augusti Anno Christi M.D.XXX. Signatures: a⁴ b⁶ (b6 blank). First edition of this polemic in defence of Avicenna, whose achievement the author ranks higher than anything in Western medicine. Probably the final work of the Alsace-born (and possibly Vienna-trained) physician, astrologer and geographer Fries (also known as Frisius or Phryes; d. 1530/32): his literary legacy, in which he "avows himself as an unconditional disciple of Arabism" (cf. NDB). - Slight waterstaining to gutter; one double-leaf loosened; final blank shows tear to edge. Exceedingly rare; no copy in auction records since 1950. Show moreThis volume is the unique edition of this early Persian-English poetry anthology, containing selected texts of some fables together with fragments of well-known Persian poets such as Enveri, Daqiqi, Jami, Saadi, Ammar, Shirazi, Rashid al-Din , Firdawsi and Rudegi. It is atributed to Stürmer who prepared the collection during his studies at Viennas Oriental Academy, although the work is also attributed to Bernhard Jenisch. in Latinvm translata ac Mariae Theresiae Avgvstae honoribvs dicata a Caesarea Regia Lingarvm Orientalivm Academia. His autogr. ownership on the title page is dated "Halle 1821", marking this as an early acquisition of scholarly literature by the former tailors apprentice, batman, ships scullion, waiter, and footboy after having graduated from the Hamburg Johanneum in 1821. Later in the collection of the Dresden mathematician and librarian Carl Kuschel (1814-99); his autogr. ownership on t. p.; his acquisition note on pastedown: "Hocce Bohlenii exemplar im meam migravit bibliothecam die 10mo Aprilis 1844 (constat 15 gr. arg.)". Subsequently in the collection of the Halle historian and orientalist Gustav Friedrich Hertzberg (1826-1907); his autogr. ownership on t. p. Sold by Harrassowitz to the Zurich printer and publisher Friedrich Paul David Bürkli (1818-96) in 1895, a year before his death (his autogr. ownership to t. p.; his bookplate on pastedown). Bürkli took an avid interest in the history and culture of the orient and amassed a vast library on the subject. His collection, numbering some 1500 titles, passed almost entirely to the Zurich Municipal Library (now in the Zurich Central Library). Show less

Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan (known as "Geber" in the Latin tradition) is the name of an author whose historical existence is under debate, but who, according to Arabic culture, is said to have lived in the second half of the eight century, been the head of a hermetic school, and left an extensive body of works on natural philosophy and alchemy. The rediscovery of Geber for the history of chemistry and alchemy, was introduced by Hermann Kopp in the 19th century. The first German edition, published in Vienna in 1751, was entitled "Geberi des Königes der Araber [...] vollständige Chymische Schriften, worinnen in den vier Büchern das Quecksilber, Schwefel, Arsen inn Gold, Silber, Bley, Zinn, Kupfer, Eisen & Oefen [..], Destillationen [...], Essenzen, Salze, Alaune [...], Cinnober, Glaß, Boras, Essig &c. abgehandelt werden; wie auch das Testament, Güldene Buch der dreyen Wörter Kallid Rachaidibi, und andere Chymische Tractätgen, Summa, die ganze Kunst die unvollkommenen Metalle [...] in Vollkommene, als Silber und Gold zu verwandeln; das ist: wie man Silber und Gold machen soll, enthalten [...]". - Publisher's printed dedication to Caspar Richter ("Polonixe Secretario"). One edge tear to a single leaf. Slight worming throughout (more pronounced near end). Slight waterstaining to a few leaves; occasional insignificant browning or brownstaining.
