Schwerdt. "Three hundred copies only of this book have been printed and all plates have been destroyed. This copy is no. 99. [Signed] C.F.G.R. Schwerdt." Some of the frontispieces, plates, portraits and facsimiles are colored, some folded and some mounted. V. 1-3 were published in 1928 and v. 4 in 1937. Limited first edition, of this beautifully decorated catalogue of the collection of Charles Francis George Richard Schwerdt, on hunting, hawking & shooting, catalogued by H. Collmann and others. The volumes are hand numbered 238 (of 300), except for volume 4, which was published 9 years after the first 3, but it, like volume 1, is signed by the author below the limitation statement. Schwerdt (1862-1939) was a passionate book collector who first started collecting books on all sports and later narrowed his collecting down to the sports of hunting, hawking and shooting, resulting in the collection displayed in the present catalogue. After his dead in 1939, the collection containing printed books and manuscripts, was sold in four auctions at Sotheby's in 1939, and two more in 1946. In fine condition, with the pages untrimmed and only a few very minor marginal stains. The binding very good, with only the corners a bit worn. No. 289 of the beautifully illustrated catalogue of Schwerdt's collection on hunting, hawking and shooting, bound by Kelly & Sons. Show moreThe first volume deals with the political institutions of the Ottoman Empire, beginning with the life of Mohammed, excerpts from the Koran, and a discussion of the ethnic history of Turkey, before delving into the various rulers and regimes. The last two chapters of Volume I discuss the causes and results of the Russo-Turkish War and the finances/economic value of Turkey. The second volume is more concerned with Christianity: that is, nations under Turkey's influence, specifically Christian communities as either minorities within each state or as subject to the influence of Russia and/or the Ottoman Empire. Syria in particular gets a lot of attention, as does Armenia and Greece. A whole chapter is devoted to the history of the Orthodox Church in the region. A long discussion of the Order of the Assassins of Persia and Syria of the 11th and 12th centuries, and their secret sects. by Richard Robert Madden.
