Show moreThis two-volume work describes the travels and studies of the Scottish diplomat and author David Urqhart who spent ten years researching the laws, politics, and diplomatic position of the East, with a particular focus on Turkey. This book records his observations, evaluations and conclusions. The book details the social lives, customs and laws of administration of 250 towns and villages that Urqhart visited. Urqhart describes in detail his adventures through a variety of terrains, including watercourses, mountainous regions, and wastelands. Other chapters make military comparisons between Britain and Turkey, and observations about the cultural differences of Turks to Europeans, in particular British citizens. The book gives an overview of the Turkey’s international relations, and concludes with a chapter concerning Urqhart’s impressions and reflections on ascending Mount Olympus. Show less
