Show moreDouble-page engraved twin-hemispherical world map, elaborate strap work borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, all hand-colored by a contemporary hand, French text on verso, Rumold Mercator's world map condensed his father's great world map of 1569 into double hemispherical form. It first appeared in Isaac Casaubon's edition of Strabo's Geographia (Geneva, 1587), and was then incorporated into editions of Mercator's atlas from 1595 to 1630 with the plate unchanged, also this Map engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names' (Shirley). The North Pole is illustrated as a landmass surrounding a sea from which four rivers radiate, and there is a well depicted North West passage. A huge southern continent and the bulge in the south west coast of South America indicate the influence of Gerard Mercator. Relief shown pictorially. "Duysburghi Clivorum typis aeneis." Plate was engraved in 1587, this impression likely 1619 (note cracks at top edge and French text on verso, see R. Shirley, The mapping of the world, p. 179 #157) Decorative border. Hand colored. The second edition (first 1546) of Abu Ali al-Khayyat's Kitab al-Mawalid as translated to Latin by Johannes Hispalensis (John of Seville). "[The author's] fame in mediaeval Europe stems from the K. al-Mawalid, a work on judicial astrology which also contains horoscopes for illness, frequent citations from Ptolemy and Hermes on the pars fortunae, etc. Two Latin translations were made of it, one by Plato of Tivoli (Plate Tiburtinus) at Barcelona in 1136, and the other by Seville in 1153; the latter translation was printed in Nuremberg (1546, 1549)" (EI) The translator, Johannes Hispalensis, was "the chief and most voluminous translator of astrological works from Arabic into Latin in the twelfth century. [His trnaslations] remained in use during the later middle ages and many of them appeared in print in early editions" (Thorndike, II, p. 73). Joachim Heller was a leading member of the circle of the celebrated Humanist and Reformer Philip Melanchthon, to whom the preface of this edition is Albohali is addressed. Heller explains Albohali's method, and states that the work is published from a manuscript which was once in the library of King Mathias of Hungary. El, IV, p. 1162; Sezgin, VII, pp. 120-21. First edition of the Ecchelensis translations of both works, the first published version of Books V - VII of Apollonius's Conics, which only survive in the Arabic version of Abu 'l-Fath al-Isfahani, based on the translation of Thabit ibn Qurra. Apollonius introduced the terms ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. The first four books of the Conics "probably contain little that was not alreay known ... Books V - VII seen to contain the discoveries which he himself had made" (Smith, History of mathematics, I, p. 117). These books were presumed lost (the eighth is still lost) until Borelli discovered an Arabic manuscript in the Medici library in Florence. Abraham Ecchelensis was a Maronite, born in Syria, who died in Rome 1664. He was professor of Arabic and Syriac in Rome and Paris. The Archimedes was translated from another Arabic manuscript in the Medici library, a translation from the Greek by Thabit ibn Qurra: as with the Apollonius, the Greek original of this text does not survive. For Apollonius see Sezgin, V, pp. 139-43; for Thabit ibn Qurra see Seagin, V. pp. 264-274. Norman 58; Riccardi I, 158, 5 ("Bella edizione, ed assai ricercata"). Show moreA pioneering Egyptologist, dedicated to careful, methodical and economical research, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853–1942) made Near Eastern archaeology a much more rigorous and scientific discipline. This 1906 publication covers Petrie's work in the Sinai Peninsula, investigating the historical and biblical significance of the region, especially as it related to the Exodus. Copiously illustrated with photographs, the book depicts the region's climate, geography and antiquities, recording the logistical and archaeological processes that characterised Petrie's approach. Notable is the material on ancient turquoise mines and a Middle Kingdom temple at Serabit el-Khadim, where inscriptions in the previously unknown Proto-Sinaitic script were discovered. Several chapters by Charles T. Currelly (1876–1957) record additional travels and observations. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications are also reissued in this series. William Matthew Flinders Petrie. Show less

Marcy (1812–87), who retired from the US Army as a brigadier general in 1881, was first published in 1859. Reissued here is the 1863 edition, edited with notes by the British explorer Sir Richard Burton (1821–90). The subtitle of the original edition describes it as A Hand-Book for Overland Expeditions, with Maps, Illustrations, and Itineraries of the Principal Routes between the Mississippi and the Pacific, and it was hugely influential, as an official US Government publication, in encouraging the great overland migrations which took European settlers to the American west. The book, based on Marcy's own experience of western travel, covers the routes to Oregon and California, the equipment needed, the treatment of animals, and the possibility of encounters with Native American tribes. This is a fascinating account of the practical steps necessary to enable emigrants to be self-reliant and to survive. Randolph B. Marcy, Edited by Richard Francis Burton. Show moreOne of the most renowned nineteenth-century British explorers of Africa, David Livingstone (1813–73) was a medical missionary who received the Royal Geographical Society gold medal in 1855. His fame was established by his 1853–6 coast-to-coast exploration of the African interior, and by the best-selling Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, published upon his return to England in 1857 (also reissued in this series). Livingstone's last expedition in search of 'the true source of the Nile', undertaken in 1866, forms the core of this two-volume travel diary, published posthumously in 1874. Volume 1 describes his illness-plagued journey from Zanzibar to Ujiji, in Western Tanzania. It also records his 1871 encounter with the New York Herald correspondent and explorer Henry Morton Stanley, who had been dispatched to find him after Livingstone had been cut off from the outside world for so long that he was presumed dead.
