Show moreCollection of views of Palestine and Lebanon by the British politician, writer, traveller and patron of the arts Francis Egerton, Earl of Ellesmere (1800-57). The attribution of these plates is established by a note in the British Library copy, which also contains a letter from Egerton referring to "my lithographs", which he obviously presented as gifts to friends. The first plate alone is signed: "F. E. del.t. G. Hawkins Lith.". Lord and Lady Francis spent the winter and spring of 1839-40 travelling in the Mediterranean, mostly aboard Lord Francis's own yacht. Lady Francis (Harriet Catherine née Greville, a great-great-granddaughter of the 5th Baron Brooke) published her account of the tour in 1841 (Abbey Travel, no. 384), containing four lithographs, two of which are reproduced in the present collection in larger size. The date is taken from the date of presentation (1846) in the BL copy. Show moreThe album is an account of the 1861 visit to Jerusalem undertaken by the François-Edmond Pâris, Rear-admiral of the French Navy in command of the third French Squadron of the Mediterranean. In the historical notes introducing the plates, the author provides references and impressions. François-Edmond Pâris joined the French Navy in 1820 and took part in three great expeditions: the first under d’Urville abord the Astrolabe (1826-9), and two under Laplace on the Favorite (1829-32) and the Artémise (1837-40). In 1858 he was named rear-admiral and was given the command of the third French Squadron of the Mediterranean. Before publishing “Souvenirs de Jerusalem,” Pâris had already published two important folios on naval and marine architecture. Show moreThis English edition of the work of the Arab traveller usually known as Ibn Battuta (130468/9) was translated by Rev. Samuel Lee (17831852), Professor of Arabic in the University of Cambridge, from 'the abridged Arabic manuscript copies, preserved in the Public Library of Cambridge', and published in 1829. Lee's work sparked widespread European interest in Ibn Battuta, who had set off from his native Morocco on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1325, and kept travelling for the next twenty-four years, reaching as far east as China and as far south as Zanzibar, as well as visiting parts of Spain and the Byzantine Empire. On his return, he dictated an account of his travels; Lee translated an abridged version, but fuller versions were later discovered. There is doubt as to whether Ibn Battuta actually saw everything he described, but this account gives a fascinating world-view from the medieval period. by Samuel Lee.
