A sumptuous volume dedicated to Woodward's celebrated collection of horse paintings, finely printed in a limited edition of 300 copies for private circulation. With an introduction by Woodward and notes by Walter Vosburgh, official handicapper for The Jockey Club. William Woodward (1876-1953), a wealthy New York banker, had a controlling interest in the historic Belair Estate and stud farm (Maryland), which under his direction grew into one of the most successful breeding and thoroughbred horse racing stables of the United States. Woodward owned paintings by George Stubbs and John Nott Sartorius, but his collection was predominated by John Frederick Herring, arguably the greatest 19th-century painter of horses. The collection included a painting of the famous Godolphin Arabian by Stubbs and was considered one of the finest of its kind. The present copy is inscribed by Woodward on the first blank to the New York investment banker Ernest Inselin: "To / my good friend / Ernest Iselin / silent, constant, faithful / adherent of the / Belair Stud / with affectionate regards / William Woodward". A fine copy. Main Heritage Shelves General SF285 .W66 1929 Book Item-ID: i16220596 BIB-ID: 1463241 Show less
