Show moreTravel poster advertising the passenger train route connecting London to Baghdad operated by the European railway company "Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits" (International Sleeping-Car Company). The distance was covered by two rail routes, the Simplon Orient Express from London (via Calais and Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan, Venice, Trieste, Zagreb, Belgrade, Sofia) to Istanbul, and the Taurus Express from Istanbul to Aleppo and Baghdad. In the early years (the 1930s), the line was only operated to Nusaybin in Eastern Turkey, and it was extended to Tall Ziwan in Eastern Syria a few years later. From there, Ford automobiles took the passengers to Kirkuk in Iraq. The last leg to Baghdad was accomplished by narrow-gauge railway. Targeted to British travelers, the poster was issued by the French Paris-Lyon-Mediteranée (PLM) railway company and promoted a safe, quick and economical journey. The poster was designed by Fench illustrator Roger Broders, best known for his Art Deco posters commissioned by the PLM, characterized by simple lines and bold, flat areas of color, combined with a noticeable graphical perspective. The poster depicts the Arch of Ctesiphon (Taq Kasra), an important archeological monument near Baghdad, without any people. Title and date from item. The poster is signed, titled and dated. The illustration is captioned "Ctesiphon Arch - near Baghdad". Additional text "Safery. Rapidity. Economy". Inscribed "LUCIEN SERRE & Cie. IMP. 15-17-19, Rue du Terrage, PARIS". Show moreTravel poster by Guy Georget advertising Air France flights to the Near and Middle. The painting depicts an Arab character and some stylized details recalling the exotic imaginary related to the Arabian Peninsula and the Arab world, namely a minaret, a dome, a dallah (the traditional Arab coffee pot) and an oil tower. The white outline around the image makes it appear almost like a collage. Guy Georget worked extensively with tourism boards to produce posters promoting travel and tourism. His first commercial posters appear in the late 1940s and from the 1960s he worked for Air France, prestigious employment for graphic artists of the time. His style is characterized by graphism with bolder lines and brighter colors. He was strongly influenced by Cubism. Title from item, date devised by Library Staff.
