Map originally issued in two sheets. Eastern sheet bears title: Partie orientale du monde, qui contiennent l'Europe, l'Asie, et l'Afrique. California is shown as an island. Northwest Passage is shown in detail. Prime meridian: Ferro. Nicolaas Witsen was burgomaster of Amsterdam, map collector and mapmaker. He was also ambassador to Russia and to the court of King William III of England. He specialized in collecting manuscript maps of Arabia and Asia. Map was prepared by the Venetian cartographer and publisher François (or Francesco Père) Santini and first published in Santini's 'Atlas Universel dressée sur les meuilleures cartes modernes 1776. In 1784 Santini sold the plates to M. Remondini, whose name appears on this particular example, indicating that this is the second state of the map. "P. 11." The map covers the Egypt divided into; the Bais and Heptanomi. Part of Arabia is shown. Notes on Towns as well as explanation of some Arabic words are given in French [low. r. h.] Scale: Roman miles of 75 of the degree.
