Circular world map with Jersusalem at the center, based on a portolan chart by Pietro Vesconte which originally appeared in the Liber secretorum fidelium crucis super Terrae Sanctae recuperatione et conservatione, by Marino Sanudo. [World Sphere]. Map of the world placing Jerusalem, the centre and showing three continents namely; Europe, Asia and Africa. The map is roughly made and this is probably due to limited knowledge of the area. For example Africa is drawn like a shoe, there is much exageration at the south. Arabia is represented in rectangular shape, with Mecca as the centre of Arabian peninsula, two other towns are marked as Cede port (part of Jeddah) and St Catarina, this is placed not very far from Jeddah. There are lines from south, north, west and east making point of inter-section at Jerusalem. Size: 34 x 34.40 cm. Published in 1611. Coloured. Latin. From: Gesta Dei per Francos ... [Edited by Jacques Bongars]. Hanoviæ : typis Wechelianis, apud heredes I. Aubrii, 1611. Title supplied by cataloger. Willem Janszoon started the map publishing business of the Blaeu family in Amsterdam in 1599. With the Mercator plates he acquired, he published Atlantis Appendix in 1630 and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1635. After his death, his son Joan Blaeu (1596 - 1673) published the Atlas Major which they have been working on. This Atlas is considered the most magnificent work of its kind. Relief shown pictorially. Show moreDouble-page engraved twin-hemispherical world map, elaborate strap work borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, all hand-colored by a contemporary hand, French text on verso, Rumold Mercator's world map condensed his father's great world map of 1569 into double hemispherical form. It first appeared in Isaac Casaubon's edition of Strabo's Geographia (Geneva, 1587), and was then incorporated into editions of Mercator's atlas from 1595 to 1630 with the plate unchanged, also this Map engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names' (Shirley). The North Pole is illustrated as a landmass surrounding a sea from which four rivers radiate, and there is a well depicted North West passage. A huge southern continent and the bulge in the south west coast of South America indicate the influence of Gerard Mercator. Relief shown pictorially. "Duysburghi Clivorum typis aeneis." Plate was engraved in 1587, this impression likely 1619 (note cracks at top edge and French text on verso, see R. Shirley, The mapping of the world, p. 179 #157) Decorative border. Hand colored.
