Show moreVintage poster advertising the services run by the French maritime company "Compagnie des messageries maritimes" (MM) from Marseille to Alexandria, Beirut, and Port Said. The poster depicts an ocean liner with three chimneys at sea; below the image information on the dates of departure, ports of call and the tariffs. The S. S. Providence was a vessel built in 1913 for the "Compagnie française de Navigation à vapeur Cyprien Fabre & Cie" (Fabre Line). Like her sister ship Patria, she plied as a transatlantic liner between Marseille and New York from 1914 then until 1920, when they were both reassigned to carrying emigrants to New York from Naples, Palermo and Marseille. After the Wall Street Crash of 1929 Messageries Maritimes withdrew S. S. Providence from the emigrant trade in 1932 when they began service for Messageries Maritimes between southern France and the Eastern Mediterranean countries of the Middle East. The poster depicts a man pouring olive oil with his right hand. His eye represents the Tunisian flag, with the crescent and the red star. He wears a traditional Tunisian hat. In the background, a map of North Africa and Tunisia, with the cities of Bizerte, Tunis, Sousse, Sfax, and Maharès. Olive oil became a symbolic matter of resistance over the colonial power of French administration in Tunisia during the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Roberts Title from item, date devised by LIbrary staff. In 19th-century half brown morocco, brown cloth-covered boards; spine lettered 'Sketches in Spain.' and 'Roberts.' The 'Table of Contents' on the verso of the engraved dedication calls for XXVI pl. - including engraved title page. Most plates are unsigned. A few are signed in the plate by David Roberts, or as lithographically printed by Day & Son. The engraved dedication carries on its verso a list of the plates, in which the lithographers were named as T.S. Boys, W. Gauci, T. Allom, T.S. Cooper, L. Haghe and D. Roberts.
