Small 4to, 1l + 142 + 1 lea.. with woodcut astronomical diagram on title and printer's device, woodcut diagrams and horoscopes in text, printer's device at colophon, woodcut initials; ownership inscription partially erased from foot of title, single wormhole in outer margin towards the end, soem damp-staining in the lower half; a good copy in contemporary limp vellum; seventeenth-century inscription on fly leaf referring to Welsch's comments on Alcabitius. Abu I-Saqr al-Qabisi's tenth-century text al-Mudkhal, 'Introduction to the Art of Astrology', as translated to Latin in the twelfth century by Johannes Hispalensis, commented upon in the fourteenth century by Johannes Sexonius, and printed in Venice at the beginning of the sixteenth century. "The book, as the title indicates, is an introductory exposition of some of the fundamental principles of genethlialogy; its present usefulness lies primarily in its quotations from the Sassanian Andarzghar literature and from al-Kindi the Indians, Ptolemy, Dorotheus of Sidon, Masha'allah, Hermes Trismegistus, and Valens"(DSB). First edition of the first great bibliography of surgery, arranged historically, the first volume with texts from the Greek and Arabic classics to 1710 and the second from 1710 to the time of publication. Von Haller (1708-1777), a Swiss physician and anatomist, was a child prodigy who delved into classical languages, mathematics, botany and many other subjects. He studied at Tübingen and Leiden and became professor of medicine, botany and anatomy at Göttingen. His present bibliography of surgery is valuable not only for its record of about 10.000 publications on the subject, but also for his introductory texts to the various sections and his comments on individual publications and authors. It was the last of his 4 great bibliographical works to be completed during his life, following the Bibliotheca botanica and Bibliotheca anatomica, and followed by the posthumous Bibliotheca medicinae practicae. The books in his own library are indicated by an asterisk. - Somewhat foxed, primarily in the first few and last few leaves of each volume, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding good.
