This book, published in 1883 by the Bombay Gazette, is a guide to the colonial history and topography of Bombay. The chapters originally appeared as articles in the Bombay Gazette, where they were well received by the public. The book provides an account of the occupation of Bombay, and includes chapters about major historical events, laws, and the activities of political figures. Chronicling the history of the city from the seventeenth century, before the time of the Suez Canal, the book explains how the islands of Bombay became English territory after they were given as a dowry for Catherine of Braganza, who married Charles II in 1661. Other chapters include the impact of the achievements of Nelson, Napoleon, John Malcolm, and the Duke of Wellington. The book concludes with twelve quotations dating from different time periods concerning the appearance and setting of Bombay, and twelve quotations concerning the social and political aspects of the territory. Show moreIn this book, Burton states his aim is to provide an insight into the characters and thought-modes of mankind. He attempts to redress the prevalent attitude that there is little culture in Africa of his time. The work consists of proverbs translated from seven languages and grouped accordingly. These are largely single sentences or two lines, and the original saying is provided alongside the English translation. On occasion, Burton provides a number of explanatory notes but largely leaves each proverb without adornment. Towards the end of the volume, there are some longer tales and sayings, and these are accompanied by a simultaneous translation. The work ends with a description of the significance of single words from a miscellany of languages, with the context of their use described. compiled by Richard F. Burton ...
