Show moreThis book contains translations of Arabic poetry with a strong focus on early, pre-Islamic, or material from the Seventh Century. The work begins with an overview of the source material, with historical chapters on the ancient Arabs and literature under the Caliphates. Notes on the different interpretations of the poems and issues of authorship are also discussed. The collection includes a number of short poems, but also holds two significant works: "The Moallakat", which represents seven significant poems forming one consistent work, and the epic "The Romance of Antar", which comprises 32 books. Each collection, including the chapters devoted to shorter poems, is provided by a different translator, resulting in a number of different styles throughout the work. Notes are provided giving further context and explanation for the reader. Introduction -- The Moallakát / translated by Sir W. Jones --Shorter poems / translated by J.D.
