With special title-pages for parts I-II, III, and IV. The first two parts were originally published (Utrecht, 1705) under title: De religione mohammedica libri duo. The material, including translations of many passages, was drawn from original sources, chiefly from Abū Shujāʻ. cf. Quérard. La France litt., 1835, t. 7, p. 512. The third part, originally published in Latin (Oxoniae, 1690) under title: Tractus Alberti Bovovii ... de Turcorum liturgia, includes notes by Thomas Hyde. The fourth part, by Mathurin Veyssière de Lacroze, was first published in his Dissertations historiques sur divers sujets (Rotterdam, 1707) cf. Quérard. La France litt., 1800, t. 4, p. 381. Show moreThis view is part of Fischer von Erlach’s large compilation of historical architecture entitled “Entwurf Einer Historischen Architektur” (Project for a history of architecture). This view of Mecca appeared as plate VII (numbered here top right) in Book Three of the work, devoted to Arab, Turkish, Persian, Chinese and Japanese monuments. The view is accompanied by a caption in German and French, with numerous locations identified by a key, which recites: Prospect view of a part of the large city of Mecca, with its celebrated holy places, where according to the Mohammedans, was the location of the House of Abraham and the fountain of Ishmael; eventually where Mohammed wrote the Koran: This place is visited each year by caravans of Turks.
