The penultimate incunable edition of what "remained for centuries the standard text-book of pharmacy in the West" (Sarton), with the commentary of Mondino, the great anatomist, and other texts including Abulcasis' Liber servitoris. Mesue "was for centuries the authority on the composition of medicaments. The book was not only in use in practically every European pharmacy but in addition became the basis of the later official pharmacopoeias. The Grabadin [or Antidotarium, contained here] is, as Sudhoff calls it, 'the pharmacological quintessence of Arabian therapeutics' and contains the entire armamentarium of compounded medicines which we owe to the Arabians. The arrangement is like that of the later pharmacopoeias. The compounded medicines are divided into groups according to their forms - confections, juleps, syrups, etc. - the monographs containing directions for the preparation of the respective products and also notes on their medical uses" (Edward Kremers and George Urdang, History of Pharmacy, 1940, p. 21). Double-page engraved twin-hemispherical world map, elaborate strap work borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, all hand... Show moreDouble-page engraved twin-hemispherical world map, elaborate strap work borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, all hand-colored by a contemporary hand, French text on verso, Rumold Mercator's world map condensed his father's great world map of 1569 into double hemispherical form. It first appeared in Isaac Casaubon's edition of Strabo's Geographia (Geneva, 1587), and was then incorporated into editions of Mercator's atlas from 1595 to 1630 with the plate unchanged, also this Map engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names' (Shirley). The North Pole is illustrated as a landmass surrounding a sea from which four rivers radiate, and there is a well depicted North West passage. A huge southern continent and the bulge in the south west coast of South America indicate the influence of Gerard Mercator. Relief shown pictorially. "Duysburghi Clivorum typis aeneis." The second edition (first 1546) of Abu Ali al-Khayyat's Kitab al-Mawalid as translated to Latin by Johannes Hispalensis (John of Seville). "[The author's] fame in mediaeval Europe stems from the K. al-Mawalid, a work on judicial astrology which also contains horoscopes for illness, frequent citations from Ptolemy and Hermes on the pars fortunae, etc. Two Latin translations were made of it, one by Plato of Tivoli (Plate Tiburtinus) at Barcelona in 1136, and the other by Seville in 1153; the latter translation was printed in Nuremberg (1546, 1549)" (EI) The translator, Johannes Hispalensis, was "the chief and most voluminous translator of astrological works from Arabic into Latin in the twelfth century. [His trnaslations] remained in use during the later middle ages and many of them appeared in print in early editions" (Thorndike, II, p. 73). Joachim Heller was a leading member of the circle of the celebrated Humanist and Reformer Philip Melanchthon, to whom the preface of this edition is Albohali is addressed. Show moreThis volume collects several woks on medecine, being the first that of 'Abu Zakariyya' Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh, known as Mesue Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh (C.777-857), one of the great name of Islamic medicine. He was personal physician to the abbasid Caliphs al-Ma'mun, al-Mutasim, al-Wathiq and al-Mutawakkil, and spent most of his life in baghdad and Samarra. He contributed to the translating activities of the famous Bayt al-Hikma; and Hunayn ibn Ishaq, the most influential of the traslators of Greek scientific texts, was his pupil. Despite his distinction, much of Ibn Masawayh's writing has not reached us. Just a handful of his text are extant in Arabic. More has been preserved in Latin Translation, though the attribution of some text to an elder as opposed to a younger Mesue has given the false impression thar there was more than one Ibn Masawayh. It is followed by a well-known work by Francisco de Pedemontium and the Antidotarium of Nicolaus Salernitarum. The last work on medecine is from Abulkasim. Antidotarium Nicolai. First edition of Alban Thorer's (Albanus Torinus) paraphrase of books I-IV of Serapion's Therapeutica methodi, the remainder in the translation of Gerard of Cremona, with the Aphorisms published for the first time. Serapion the elder was a Christian physician who flourished in Damascus in the second half of the ninth century. He wrote, in Syriac, two medical compilations, one in 12, the other (as here) in 7 books. The latter was several times translated into Arabic, and thence into Latin by Gerard of Cremona. First edition of one of the rarest of Champier's early medical works, published between 1509 and 1515 in Lyons and unknown to Allut (Etude Biographique & Bibliographique sur Symphorien Champier, Lyons, 1859). Champier, physician, surgeon, humanist and chronicler, wrote many and various books, amongst them the first important history of medicine, De medicinae claris scriptoribus in quinque partibus tractatus (Lyons, 1506). Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan (known as "Geber" in the Latin tradition) is the name of an author whose historical existence is under debate, but who, according to Arabic culture, is said to have lived in the second half of the eight century, been the head of a hermetic school, and left an extensive body of works on natural philosophy and alchemy. The rediscovery of Geber for the history of chemistry and alchemy, was introduced by Hermann Kopp in the 19th century. The first German edition, published in Vienna in 1751, was entitled "Geberi des Königes der Araber [...] vollständige Chymische Schriften, worinnen in den vier Büchern das Quecksilber, Schwefel, Arsen inn Gold, Silber, Bley, Zinn, Kupfer, Eisen & Oefen [..], Destillationen [...], Essenzen, Salze, Alaune [...], Cinnober, Glaß, Boras, Essig &c. abgehandelt werden; wie auch das Testament, Güldene Buch der dreyen Wörter Kallid Rachaidibi, und andere Chymische Tractätgen, Summa, die ganze Kunst die unvollkommenen Metalle [...] in Vollkommene, als Silber und Gold zu verwandeln; das ist: wie man Silber und Gold machen soll, enthalten [...]". - Publisher's printed dedication to Caspar Richter ("Polonixe Secretario").
