Per Hermannum Comitem a Neflenar, integro candori nuper restitutus autor. Strasbourg, Johannes Schott, 1532. Folio, title within five-piece woodcut border, woodcut initials in both parts, eight full-page woodcuts (one folded, having larger margins left by the binder), and numerous woodcuts in the text of Abulcasis (see below); small library stamp on verso of title, four marginal tears repaired, some worming towards the end; a pleasant copy, with striking endpapers, bound in eighteenth century German mottled sheep, large gilt arms of the Munich Court Library on covers, spine gilt in compartments. A very handsome edition of Abulcasis surgical text, “the first rational, complete and illustrated treatise on surgerY and surgical instruments” (Garrison-Morton). Many of the operative procedures and instruments described by Abulcasis do not appear in extant classical writings and may therefore be regarded as his own, or at least as being part of distinctly Arab practice. The work deals extensively with cauterization, a procedure recommended by the Prophet, and contains several chapters on dentistry and operations of the eve. gvnaecologv and the treatment of wounds and fractures. Some woodcuts illustrate many and various surgical and dental instruments and there are fullpage depictions of cauterization, amputation, the treannent of wounds from projectiles and trepanation. Illustrations to the chapter on dentistry are on pages 173177, including a woodcut of teeth strengthened with silver threads. The printer has also re-used the woodcut blocks by Johann Wechtlin for Gersdorfs Feidhuch dci Wundarizney, 1517. See Guerini, A History of Dentistry, i oq, pp. 125 et seq. fbi an extended discussion of Abulcasis dentistry and instruments. “The chief influence of Albucasis on the medical system of Europe was that his lucidity and method of presentation awakened a prepossession in favour of Arabic liter attire among the scholars of the West: the methods of Alburasis eclipsed those of Galen and maintained a dominant position in medical Europe for live hundred years Albucasis descriptions of operations are clear and particularly valuable because they portray the figures of surgical instruments used in the Middle Ages ... most of the figures of mediaeval times derived from those of Albucasis and incidentally show no knowledge of perspective” (Campbell, p. 88). First edition of Priscianus Euporzston (a go edition, printed by Froben in Basle in the same year was probably published later). Priscianus was a physician who flourished in the 4th century A.D. The first book deals with external ailments, including chapters on the ear, the nose and teeth; the second is on internal medicine and the third book, the Gynaecia, is one of the earliest monographs on obstetrics and gynaecology (see Ricci, The Genealogy of Gynaecology pp. 148149). The title-page is decorated by five woodcut strip ornaments, of which the two vertical ones are by Heinrich Vogtherr, and the three horizontal ones are by Hans Weiditz. Eiusdem liber investigationis perfecti magisterij, artis alchimicae. Lis additus liber trium verborum. Epistola item Alexandri Imperatoris, qui primus regnavit in Graecia. Parsarum quoque exitit Imperator: Super eadem re. [colophon:] Strasbourg, Jean Gruninger, 29 August 1531. Folio, 120p with large title woodcut and numerous large Woodcut illustrations; a good, large copy, washed, in modern vellum. Extremely rare, and finely illustrated edition of this famous work, also known under the title Summa perfectionis. This was the last work printed by Gruninger, famous for his illustrated books: the title woodcut here is probably by Wechtelin. Gruninger first issued it in 1529, an edition which appears to be even rarer than the present one. Gruninger's is the first illustrated edition of Geber. Centainly, De alchimia and the other works of the Geberian corpus were of greatest influence on Western chemistry and "whether they by translations or elaborations, they represent the amount of Arabic chemical knowledge made available to Latin reading people toward the end of the thirteenth century" (Sarton II, p. 1044). Oxford Sheldonian Theatre, 1706. 8vo in half sheets, 1lea. + 2 + 1 tit. + 1 ded. + 1 + 6 pref. + 53 + 1 + 168 + 2 + 1lea, the text of Pappus printed in Greek, title of the Arabic manuscript printed in Arabic, with numerous woodcut diagrams in the text; a very good copy in contemporary panelled calf. First edition of Halley's translation of Apollonius's "Cutting-off of a ratio" from an Arabic manuscript. This text of Apollonius, like Books V-VII of the Conics (previous book) survives only in Arabic, and in this case the Arabic remains unpublished. "Much of Halley's scholarship was exercised upon the works of Apollonius of Perga, one of the greatest mathematicians of antiquity, and indeed of all time, who flourished in the latter part of the third century B. C. One of his minor works, Sectio rationis (Cutting-off of a ratio), an exercise in geometrical algebra, was thought to be lost until an Arabic translation of it was found among the Selden manuscripts in the Bodleian and identified by Edward Bernard, the Savillian Professor of Astronomy. Bernard set about translating it into Latin; but the manuscript was very defective and he soon laid the task aside. His successor, David Gregory, made a fair copy of the original for the use of Henry Aldrich, Dean of Christ Church, at whose invitation Halley, upon succeeding Wallis in the Savillian Chair of Geometry, undertook to complete the translation. He had never previously studied Arabic; but using as a key the few passages translated by Bernard, he eventuaqlly made out the meaning of the text. He proceeded to restore the lost companion tract, Sectio spatii, following hints from Pappus. He gave his reasons for regarding the works as genuine; and he included in his edition the earliest printed Greek text of Pappus's preface to the seventh book of his Synagoge (Collection)" (Angus Armitage, Edmond Halley, p. 160).
