Show moreMüteferrikas only Western style publication, printed in Latin letters was this Turkish grammar, intended for Europeans, mainly for the future interpreters at the French embassy in Istanbul. It was perhaps because of the European author and public that this work does not figure in the list of the hitherto published books included in Târîh-i Nacîmâ (cf. item 13). The author is not mentioned by name, but he is obviously the German Jesuit missionary Jean-Baptiste Holderman, who died just a few weeks before the publication of his work. As much as it can be appreciated, this eighth publication of Müteferrika met an important demand among the French diplomatic corps and officers in Istanbul. We know from the correspondence of French ambassador Marquis de Villeneuve that it was Müteferrika to offer the printing of the grammar to the author. Instead of financial compensation, he only asked for the preparation of a Latin printing set fitting in size to the Arabic letters used in his press. In terms of the agreement previously signed with the French embassy, 200 copies were purchased by Marquis de Villeneuve for the courses of future interpreters in Paris and Istanbul at a price of 500 kuruş per copy. This was Müteferrikas second most popular publication: of the 1000 copies only 84 were left in his bequest. The terminology and structure of this grammar follow the Latin. Turkish material is printed in both the Arabi characters and in a rough transliteration. Both matrices and the founding of the characters were accomplished, according to the preface, at the press of the publisher with the labor of workers who are not acquainted with the French language. First edition of this remarkable book on horse anatomy. A very fine copy with Napoleonic provenance; one of the rare examples to contain the plates in both the uncoloured and the coloured state. Lafosse had considerable anatomical skill, coupled with a profound knowledge of horses and equitation, and his work ranks with Stubbs in the artistic realization of equine anatomy. The plates are rendered with great skill by B. Michel Adam, F. A. Aveline, C. Baquoy, Benard, Ch. Beulier, L. Bosse, Prevost and others after Harguinier, Lafosse and Saullier. Binding shows slight wear, but in sound condition; fore-edge stained in places throughout (and paper somewhat brittle), just touching several of the plates. The only other copy with the plates in both states in recent years auction records was the Longleat copy from Beriah Botfields library (Christies, June 13, 2002, lot 170, £28,680). An outstanding copy from the personal library of Napoléon Bonaparte, acquired before he crowned himself Emperor. Marengo, the war horse ridden by Napoleon Bonaparte, was one of the most famous Arabian stallions in 18th century Europe. Brunet III, 765.
