Show moreThis image shows a view over the city of Mecca with the Masjid al-Haram. The photograph is the left center section of a four part panorama which includes Plates II, IV and V. The photograph was taken the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s) between 1886 and 1887.
Title from caption list in portfolio. Date from item. Plate no. 3 in Bilder aus Mekka (Leiden : E. J. Brill, 1889). The plate is numbered (III). Erased Arabic description and signature “Photography by al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar, doctor in Mecca” in the upper and lower part of the print.

Typewritten note on the verso on the print: "بمنلسبة اعلان استقلال قطر، قام عدد كبير من ابناء قطر الدين يقضون فصل الصيف في لبنان و على راسهم الشيخ ناصر بن حمد ال ثاني شقيق ولي العهد ونائب الحاكم، بمسيرة في مصيف عاليه معبرين عن ابتهاجهم بهذه المناسبة. وفي الصورة اعلان مشهد من المسيرة". The print is also stamped on the back "دار الصياد. الأرشيف" (Dār al-Ṣayyād Archive), numbered (45), dated (6 ʾAylūl 1971) and tagged "بمناسبة استقلال قطر" (On thje occasion of Qatar's independence).
