Show moreThis is an antique map and view of the town of Oran / Algeria (Oran Munita Urbs et Comodus Ports in Ora Maritima Barbariae et Proprie in Regno Telensin), Seutter, Augsburg, ca. 1750.This splendid plan typifies the style and format of a series of birds-eye plans and panoramic profiles of major cities and ports published in Germany during the eighteenth century. At top is a map of the coastline showing the fortifications of the Algerian port of Oran at the bottom is a coastal view with a fleet of ships in the foreground. The chart is richly embellished with a large allegorical title cartouche featuring Zeus and his entourage. Main Heritage Compact General HC.MAP.00252 Print Map Item-ID: i11400596 BIB-ID: 1845451 Matthäus Seutter (1678-1756) was born in 1678, the son of a goldsmith, in Augsburg. In 1697 Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models, with over 500 maps produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1756 and his son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law, conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner, Johann Michael Probst, ran the printing business for five more years. Show moreDouble-page engraved twin-hemispherical world map, elaborate strap work borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, all hand-colored by a contemporary hand, French text on verso, Rumold Mercator's world map condensed his father's great world map of 1569 into double hemispherical form. It first appeared in Isaac Casaubon's edition of Strabo's Geographia (Geneva, 1587), and was then incorporated into editions of Mercator's atlas from 1595 to 1630 with the plate unchanged, also this Map engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names' (Shirley). The North Pole is illustrated as a landmass surrounding a sea from which four rivers radiate, and there is a well depicted North West passage. A huge southern continent and the bulge in the south west coast of South America indicate the influence of Gerard Mercator. Relief shown pictorially. "Duysburghi Clivorum typis aeneis." Show moreper Philippum Iollaimun Blereium, cum scholijs eiusdem. Early work on astrological meteorology by the French astrologer Firmin de Belleval from the first half of the 14th century. Here in the first edition edited by Philip Jollain of Blery after the very rare "editio princeps" printed in 1485 by Erhard Ratdolt in Venice, originally published anonymously, but generally attributed to Firmin. Although the author is indebted to the writings of Ptolemy, Pliny, Johannes Hispalensis, Albertus Magnus and many Arabic authors such as Al-Kindi, Abu Ma'shar, Ali ibn Ridwan, Abraham ben Ezra, he drew also largely on contemporary popular knowledge and oral traditions. - The prognostication is the only of Firmin's treatises that was ever printed. In essence it is a treatise on astrological meteorology and it is one of the first meteorological works ever published. Divided into 7 chapters, the book deals respectively with the nature of different parts of the sky, the stars, seasons and climates; global climate changes due to great conjunctions, eclipses and movements of the sun; similar changes due to the respective movements of the sun and the moon; particular judgments arising from the same sets of causes; and predictions concerning rain and weather forecasting in general. - A few minor spots, otherwise a very good copy with ample margins.
