Show moreتاليف احمد بن عربشاه = Ahmedis Arabsiadæ Vitæ & rerum gestarum Timuri, qui vulgo Tamerlanes dicitur, historia Ed. with a Latin preface by J. Golius. Title on half t.p.: Historia Tamerlanis Arabice. First Arabic edition of this important eyewitness account of the life of Tamerlane (Timur Lenk), the successful and barbaric Turkish conqueror in the 14th century, printed entirely in Arabic. "An interesting feature of the book is the use of blue ink for the printing of the word 'Tamerlanis' (between two red lines) on the half-title, as well as for one typographical ornament on leaf 3 recto" (Smitskamp). Based on the original Arabic manuscript completed in 1437-38 by the Syrian author Ahmad lbn 'Arabshah who was secretary to Sultan Ahmad of Baghdad. In the 16th century Timur was made famous in Europe through Christopher Marlowe's play "Tamburlaine" (publ. 1590). - The present work was edited by Jacob Golius and includes a preface by him. The Arabic manuscript used by him is still preserved at Leiden University library and contains many notes in his hand. A French translation by Pierre Vattier appeared in 1658. - II: First edition of the first Persian grammar ever to be printed (Willems notes that Raimondi, in 1614, produced a grammar in Rome for the use of missionaries which remained virtually unknown in the West, but this existed only in manuscript [cf. Smitskamp 310]). "De Dieu's most striking performance" (Smitskamp). The grammars of Ignazio di Gesù (Rome 1661) and of Labrosse (Amsterdam 1684) were largely based on his work. "The two chapters from Genesis are taken from a complete transcription in Arabic characters after the Hebrew-printed Persian text was published by Soncino in Istanbul in 1546" (Smitskamp). - Several contemporary marginal notes in the text; old table of Persian alphabet on endpapers, as well as an old ms. note reproducing Pietro Della Valle's remarks on the Persian language. A very clean, attractive copy. The Life of Tamerlane, especially, is extremely rare: the last copy on the market was the Burrell copy in 1999 (sold at Sotheby's for £8400). D'Apres de Mannevillette ( 1707-1780), whose Oriental Neptune provides the maps to accompany this Navigator, was a celebrated French cartographer who had a long and distinguished career in the French East India Company. His father was a ship's captain in the service of French West India Company, born in Le Havre, de Mannevillette visited the Caribbean in 1726 abroad Le Marechal D'Estrées, He studied under the famous Guillaume Delisle, the King's geographer, and during a voyage to China in 1728 he succeeded in correcting the latitudes of many places using new instruments. Back in France he devised a plan to correct and publish all the existing maps of the route to China: the Red Sea, the coasts of India, Malaya, the northern parts of Indonesia, Indochina and China, Interested in Navigation in his youth, he was one of the first Frenchmen to use Hadley's quadrant, from 1735 he began collecting charts and material about the navigation of Africa and the Indies, travelling extensively for the purpose During his many voyages d'Apres de Mannevillette created a number of charts for a hydrographic atlas which, with the support of the Academie des Sciences, was published in Paris in 1745 under the title "Le Neptune Oriental" with 25 maps. For the next thirty years, with the help of his friend and eminent British hydrographer Alexander Dalrymple, d'Apres de Mannevillette revised his charts for a second and enlarged edition. This comprehensive atlas was used on all French ships and by some foreign ones too, navigating the Indian Ocean. It replaced the "English Pilot" published by John Thornton in 1700 and the charts of the van Keulens, the hydrographers of the Dutch East India Company, which were full of errors. (bind.), woodcut printer's device on title, repeated on verso of final blank, some passages of Greek and Arabic in text; contemporary vellum. First edition of this late sixteenth-century commentary and Latin version of al-Farghani's 'Elements', Kitab al-Jawami, based by the translator, Jacob Christmann, on Jacob Anatoli's Hebrew version of the Arabic text. "The influence of the Elements on medieval Europe is clearly attested by the existence of numerous Latin manuscrips in European libraries. References to it in medieval writers are many, and there is no doubt that it was greatly responsible for spreading knowledge of Ptolemaic astronomy, at least until this role was taken over by Sacrobosco's Sphere. But even then the Elements of Alfraganus continued to be used, and Sacrobosco's Sphere was clearly indebted to it. It was from the Elements (in Gerard's translation) the Dante derived [his] astronomical knowledge" (DSB). Kepler refers several times to Alfraganus, once, for instance, citing his measurement of the circumference of the world (Epitome, Book I, Part I). DSB, 4, 541-545; EI, II, p. 793; Sezgin, VI, 149-51.
