Show morePhotograph album collecting pictures showing the 1962 visit of Arthur Watts, British Resident Adviser between 1960 and 1964, to the Sultan of Socotra, 'Isa bin Ali bin Afrar. The island was yearly visited by the British Resident Adviser based in Mukalla, but 1962 coincided with the return of Sultan 'Isa bin Ali bin Afrar, who had been consulting with the Qu'aiti Sultan in Mukalla. Thus, they both traveled aboard the HMS Meon to Socotra: photographs show both the Sultan and Resident being carried ashore on the shoulders of British sailors. Subsequent images show the meeting of the two over a cup of tea with the Sultan showing the sword given to him by King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. The rest of the photographs show the inhabitants of the island, the British naval men and even a street football match between "the Royal Navy and the home team of Hadibu". Title and date devised by Library staff. Prints format 15.5 x 20 cm, each with the corners inserted in triangular pockets and bearing 'Photographic Section Public Relations Department Aden' handstamp on reverse. The oblong photograph album from the 1980s includes 25 loosely inserted typed captions in English numbered 1-32 [Lacking captions numbered 2, 7, 9, 10, 28 and 29].
