Show moreThis striking map of the eastern Mediterranean and its environs was created to depict the travels of Apostle Pauli from Canaan to Rome (60 61 AD). A total of 9 panels sandwich the map depicting major scenes from Paul's life and journey including the baptism of Ananias, his escape from Damascus a shipwreck off the island of Malta (also visible in map) and his appearance before the Roman Emperor Nero. The map was engraved and hand colored to display the geo-political divisions of the region in the 1st century AD. Numerous cities towns and place names are labeled throughout, including Memphis, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Babel, Tripoli, Constantinople, Athens and Rome. Sailing ships and a compass rose embellish the seas. Dutch text on verso. nieuwlÿcx int licht gebracht door Nicolaes Visscher. Shows the travels of the Apostles and especially St. Paul, through the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. Relief shown pictorially. Graphic scale reads: "Duytse Mÿlen van 15 in een Graedt."
