Lawrence and Gertrude Bell, Sergeant John Philby was a key player in the Arab Revolt. Like Lawrence and Bell, he was first of all an Arabicist and an explorer, especially known for his accounts Heart of Arabia (1922) and The Empty Quarter (1932). In 1917 Philby arrived in al-Zubayr where is introduced to the Sheikh Ibrahim by Lieutenant A.H. Roberts: "[...] by nightfall I was deposited at the door of the Assistant Political Officer of Zubair, Lieutenant A. H. Roberts, with whom I proceeded at once to the Shaikh's residence, whither we had been bidden for dinner" (Philby, John, Heart of Arabia, London, Constable, 1922, p. 239). He chose to live in Arabia and became special adviser of Ibn Saūd and supported him in the negotiate with the British, during the Arab Revolt (1917-1918), and later on with the United States, once petroleum was discovered at the end of the 1930s.
