Show morePhotograph album collecting pictures showing the 1962 visit of Arthur Watts, British Resident Adviser between 1960 and 1964, to the Sultan of Socotra, 'Isa bin Ali bin Afrar. The island was yearly visited by the British Resident Adviser based in Mukalla, but 1962 coincided with the return of Sultan 'Isa bin Ali bin Afrar, who had been consulting with the Qu'aiti Sultan in Mukalla. Thus, they both traveled aboard the HMS Meon to Socotra: photographs show both the Sultan and Resident being carried ashore on the shoulders of British sailors. Subsequent images show the meeting of the two over a cup of tea with the Sultan showing the sword given to him by King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. The rest of the photographs show the inhabitants of the island, the British naval men and even a street football match between "the Royal Navy and the home team of Hadibu". Title and date devised by Library staff. Prints format 15.5 x 20 cm, each with the corners inserted in triangular pockets and bearing 'Photographic Section Public Relations Department Aden' handstamp on reverse. The oblong photograph album from the 1980s includes 25 loosely inserted typed captions in English numbered 1-32 [Lacking captions numbered 2, 7, 9, 10, 28 and 29]. The photographs were taken by the official members of the expedition, including his photographer Dr. Oswald Seemann, a physician by training, and Felix Langenegger, an engineer and long-time associate of Oppenheim. Most of the photographs show architectural subjects taken in wide variety of cities and archaeological sites, ranging from Aleppo to Mardin to Urfa. The present collection was probably assembled and retained by a member of Oppenheim's party, perhaps even Langenegger, or someone in his circle. Title and date devised by Library staff. Show moreThe album collects the photographs taken by the Naval Officer A. Martiensen, who took part in Wilhelm II's trip to the Levant in 1898, as he was serving on the Imperial liner "Hohenzollern" from September 1898 to March 1900. The visit was a key diplomatic move of the German Empire and the Protestant Church to strengthen the political ties with the Ottoman Empire and it was widely reported and commentated in all the media. The album was probably compiled at end of the 1920s, as indicated by the form and layout. Also, pictures are not arranged in chronological order, which would suggest that they may initially have been kept in different places and only later incorporated into the album. The last picture dates from 1929 and shows Martiensen and tourist group seated on camels in front of the Pyramid of Giza. Photographs show Wilhelm II close-ups and in an almost private setting when on board the Hohenzollern - such as for his birthday -, whereas other pictures were carefully staged and intended to serve propaganda purposes. Some of these photographs must have been taken by other people, such as the German photographer Ottomar Anschütz (1846-1907) and Empress Auguste Victoria (1858-1921) and by other professional photographers. The prints have numbers in the negative which could have been catalog numbers the passengers and crew could use to order souvenir pictures. Title devised by Library staff, date from item. The pictures are contact prints from glass negatives with a format of 12 x 18 cm. Most of them have numbers as would have been written on the glass negatives and are captioned in white ink on the mount. Photograph album apparently assembled by a French military officer based in Syria in the first period of the French Mandate in Syria and Lebanon ... Show morePhotograph album apparently assembled by a French military officer based in Syria in the first period of the French Mandate in Syria and Lebanon (1923-1946), during the handover period from Turkish to French control. Photographs show Turkish and French officers during their recreational activities, visiting ancient sites, Damascus and other cities or sailing to Egypt and Istanbul. Snapshots include the daily lives of the families of the French officers. The French Mandate of Syria was a League of Nations mandate founded after World War I and the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire. During the two years that followed the end of the war in 1918 and in accordance with the Sykes-Picot Agreement that was signed between Britain and France during the war, the French controlled most of Ottoman Syria (modern Syria, Lebanon, Alexandretta) and other portions of southeastern Turkey. In the early 1920s, the French control of these territories became formalized by the League of Nations mandate system, and France was assigned the mandate of Syria on 29 September 1923. Show morePhotograph album compiled by the French engineer Alfred Beneyton, who accomplished two study missions in Yemen, the first one between 1909 and 1910, and the second in 1911. A member of the French Geographical Society, his duty was to prospect for the construction of a narrow-gauge railway from Al-Hudaydah on the coast to the inland Sanaa. The line, proposed by the Ottoman Government, had to be constructed under a concession with a French company. To accomplish this task, Beneyton compiled the first regional topographic mapping. He mapped the borders of the triangular area between Taiz, Sanaa, and Al-Hudaydah. The present album is probably related to the 1911 mission, whose goal was to survey a long deep U-shaped line from Al-Hudaydah to Sanaa, running through the region of Ibb and touching the centers of Bayt al-Faqih, Zabid, Hais, Yarim, and Dhamar. Photographs depict city views, including buildings and mosques, landscapes and people, including his colleagues, the Ottoman officers accompanying them, as well as rulers (caimacans, sheiks - like Sheikh Menassar el-Kebir - and beys - like Mutessarif Izzet Bey and Habib Bey), Turkish soldieries, and members of local tribes like the Zaranig people, and Yemeni Jewish. In addition to villages, river valleys and mountain landscapes are depicted. Photographs picture mosques, city views, military camps, the burial of cholera patients, and the typical Yemeni coffee cultivation with the use of terraces etched into the mountainside.
