One photograph by the Georgian-Armenian pioneer photographer Vladimir Barkanov, with his studio stamp on the back of the print. One picture from the Studio Orlay de Karwa with its stamp on the verso of the print. Four photographs by Dimitri Ermakov with embossed seal and inventory numbers (80, 207, 168, and 25). Most of the photographs are studio portraits of Georgian men and women in traditional dresses, such as Gurian and Imeretians. Title from item, date devised by Library staff. Show moreThe album collects portraits of men and women from various ethnic groups of the Northern Caucasus, such as Imeritians, Lezgins, Nogais, Circassians, Kurds, Khevsurs, Ossetians, Mingrelians, Karachays, Kabardians, and Abazins. Most of the scenes were taken in Georgia, especially in the Kakheti and Gurian region, as well as in the region of Kuba and in Vladikavkaz. Most of the time "auls" - that is villages - are depicted. Portraits show noblemen and noblewomen, families, mothers with child, military officers, and people performing everyday activities such as laundering, bread baking, carrying wine jars or looming traditional dresses, as well as musicians.
