Show moreThis miniature portrait of a nobleman holding a falcon and remains of its prey (the bird's legs are held in the man's left hand) was part of an album of small court portraits prepared for Akbar I (1542-1605) Emperor of Hindustan. Portraits provided the emperor with a visual record of the members of his court. The work is attributed to the Indian miniaturist Basawan, active as a royal artist at the court of the Mughal Empire between 1556 and 1600. The miniature was later enlarged for an album prepared for Nūr-ud-dīn Muhammad Salīm (1569-1627), the future Jahāngīr, Mughal Emperor of India from 1605 to 1627.
