Show moreThe Halawiyya Madrasa sits on the site of Aleppo's great Byzantine cathedral, which dated to the fifth century AD. The cathedral was converted to a mosque in 1124. The Masjid al-Sarrajin, as it had been called - was soon after converted to a madrasa, located immediately west of the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo. The intricate wooden mihrab is set into the southern wall. An inscription dates it to 1245. Title and date devised by Library staff. The photograph is stamped with the collector stamp (C. Drächsler - Wien) and captioned in German on the verso of the print. The photograph is numbered 443 on the recto with a manuscript inscription.
