Under the image there is a part of verse 97 from surah al-'Imran و لله على للناس حج البيت من استطاع اليه سبيلا ("And [due] to Allah upon mankind is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find a way" stresses the importance of the Hajj, and to the right the seal reads'). Chinese seals and impressions both on thr front and on the verso of the print. The right the seal reads 'Shi Jiazhen'. Show moreMiniature depicting depicting the fourteenth Mughal Emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur (r. 1748–54), born to Emperor Muhammad Shah (r. 1719–48). The emperor is enthroned on a terrace under a parasol and holds a yewellered ornament. The margins have a number of medallions with black naskh and two cartouches with gold and polychrome illumination (above and below). Each panel with details of the life of Ahmad Shah Bahadur. Title and date from item. The miniature is signed and dated. Miniature is mounted, framed and glazed. The illuminated folios is accompanied by a framed panel of the same dimensions (probably both items were part of an album) with manuscript information in English about the miniature (title and author) and the Mughal Emperor - such as place and date of birth, date and age of death, place of burial, reign duration and place and date of accession. Show moreThis view is part of Fischer von Erlach’s large compilation of historical architecture entitled “Entwurf Einer Historischen Architektur” (Project for a history of architecture). This view of Mecca appeared as plate VII (numbered here top right) in Book Three of the work, devoted to Arab, Turkish, Persian, Chinese and Japanese monuments. The view is accompanied by a caption in German and French, with numerous locations identified by a key, which recites: Prospect view of a part of the large city of Mecca, with its celebrated holy places, where according to the Mohammedans, was the location of the House of Abraham and the fountain of Ishmael; eventually where Mohammed wrote the Koran: This place is visited each year by caravans of Turks.
