Currently the the official workplace of the Egyptian Presidency, the palace was designed by the Belgian architect Ernest Jaspar (1876-1940) using Neo-Mamluk architecture guidelines that typically characterised the original Heliopolis style. It was opened in December 1910 by a French company that premiered the first luxurious hotels in Africa. It was the largest hotel in the Middle East and Africa at the time.
