Soon after obtaining her degree in 1898 she travelled many times in Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula and published her account of those experiences in numerous books. After the eruption of World War I, she was recruited by British Intelligence; her political connections and the trust she had earned among the Arabs played a decisive role in the success of the Arab Revolt.
