First edition of this remarkable book on horse anatomy. A very fine copy with Napoleonic provenance; one of the rare examples to contain the plates in both the uncoloured and the coloured state. Lafosse had considerable anatomical skill, coupled with a profound knowledge of horses and equitation, and his work ranks with Stubbs in the artistic realization of equine anatomy. The plates are rendered with great skill by B. Michel Adam, F. A. Aveline, C. Baquoy, Benard, Ch. Beulier, L. Bosse, Prevost and others after Harguinier, Lafosse and Saullier. Binding shows slight wear, but in sound condition; fore-edge stained in places throughout (and paper somewhat brittle), just touching several of the plates. The only other copy with the plates in both states in recent years auction records was the Longleat copy from Beriah Botfields library (Christies, June 13, 2002, lot 170, £28,680). An outstanding copy from the personal library of Napoléon Bonaparte, acquired before he crowned himself Emperor. Marengo, the war horse ridden by Napoleon Bonaparte, was one of the most famous Arabian stallions in 18th century Europe. Brunet III, 765.
