Show moreCollection of photographs taken by an unknown photographer (and his friends) who appears to have resided at 1 Rue Rosette, probably a British expatriate living in Alexandria during the so-called Sultanate of Egypt, that is the short-lived protectorate that the United Kingdom imposed over Egypt between 1914 and 1922. Some of the photos were apparently taken from his balcony, which according to one of the photos must have been slightly up the other side of a street from the Mohamed-Aly Club. Some of the photos show the interior of the compilers' residence (entrance hall, salon, porcelain cabinets). Views of the streets of Alexandria, of British troops marching, banks of the Nile, the Docks, gardens, the British fleet, Bedouin and fishing villages and other spots outside the city. A 1914 portrait of the album compiler and a 1923 large photo showing the same and his bride emerging from their wedding and passing under upraised sticks held by young soldiers are included. Title and date devised by Library staff. Photographs size approximately 10 x 7 cm. Brief captions inked beneath almost all of the photos.
