Show moreTravel poster advertising the passenger train route connecting London to Baghdad operated by the European railway company "Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits" (International Sleeping-Car Company). The distance was covered by two rail routes, the Simplon Orient Express from London (via Calais and Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan, Venice, Trieste, Zagreb, Belgrade, Sofia) to Istanbul, and the Taurus Express from Istanbul to Aleppo and Baghdad. In the early years (the 1930s), the line was only operated to Nusaybin in Eastern Turkey, and it was extended to Tall Ziwan in Eastern Syria a few years later. From there, Ford automobiles took the passengers to Kirkuk in Iraq. The last leg to Baghdad was accomplished by narrow-gauge railway. Targeted to British travelers, the poster was issued by the French Paris-Lyon-Mediteranée (PLM) railway company and promoted a safe, quick and economical journey. The poster was designed by Fench illustrator Roger Broders, best known for his Art Deco posters commissioned by the PLM, characterized by simple lines and bold, flat areas of color, combined with a noticeable graphical perspective. The poster depicts the Arch of Ctesiphon (Taq Kasra), an important archeological monument near Baghdad, without any people. Title and date from item. The poster is signed, titled and dated. The illustration is captioned "Ctesiphon Arch - near Baghdad". Additional text "Safery. Rapidity. Economy". Inscribed "LUCIEN SERRE & Cie. IMP. 15-17-19, Rue du Terrage, PARIS".
