Show moreMost of the photographs are pictures of an album related to Prince Muhammad Ali of Egypt (r. 1805-1848) Manial Palace. The album was part of the collection of Dr. Branch's and photographs were probably taken by Carl Raswan. Dr. Branch was a Scottish Veterinarian, contemporary of Lady Anne Blunt (1837-1917), who was running the Royal Agricultural Society; created In 1908 by the government of Egypt, the institution was intended to preserve the Egyptian Arabian horse. Carl Raswan, instead, was one of the greatest scholars of Arabian bloodlines. He authored numerous books on Arabian horses and the Bedouin people who raised them, but he is especially renowned for Raswan Index, an extensive compilation of Arabian horse pedigree and strain information. Title from item, date devised by Library staff. The album also includes a 3-pages typescript note related to Muhammad Ali's horses and 9-pages article by Carl Raswan titled Feysul's Mare, the Jallabiyah, published in the January-February 1945 issue of the Western Horseman (available online http://www.geocities.ws/Heartland/Ranch/5385/TheJallabiyahPartIWHJF45.html).
