Show moreStreet view depicting the main guardhouse or police station in Mecca, described as being built by Osman Pasha, Hejaz military commander and governor (r. 1882-1886). The building features the Ottoman star and crescent symbols on the cornice and what appears to be a royal tughra (calligraphic monogram) at the center of the pediment. Ottoman soldiers, wearing fezzes stand in front. Several figures appear in small groups on the street in the foreground along with three donkeys and one horse. The plate was probably based on a photograph by the Egyptian army engineer Muhammad Sadiq Bey (1832 – 1902) in 1885. Title and date from item. Show moreFull-length seated portrait of four pilgrims from Pontianak, the capital of Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. The man on the left is described as an Arab from Hadhramaut (a region in South Arabia, mostly in present-day eastern Yemen, and part in Western Oman and Southern Saudi Arabia, who lived in Pontianak. They sit face forward on foldable chairs, looking towards the camera. The photograph was taken by Snouck Hurgronje in Jeddah between 1884 and 1885. The men are photographed in a courtyard-like space with plants – some in wide wooden pots – foliage and a window, fronted by bars, visible in the background. The negative had handwork applied. On the left, a boy described as the son of a man from the island of Ambon and a woman from Mecca. The adults face forward, looking towards the camera, while the young man averts his eyes. The photograph was probably taken by Snouck Hurgronje in Jeddah or Mecca between 1884 and 1885.
