The second edition (first 1546) of Abu Ali al-Khayyat's Kitab al-Mawalid as translated to Latin by Johannes Hispalensis (John of Seville). "[The author's] fame in mediaeval Europe stems from the K. al-Mawalid, a work on judicial astrology which also contains horoscopes for illness, frequent citations from Ptolemy and Hermes on the pars fortunae, etc. Two Latin translations were made of it, one by Plato of Tivoli (Plate Tiburtinus) at Barcelona in 1136, and the other by Seville in 1153; the latter translation was printed in Nuremberg (1546, 1549)" (EI) The translator, Johannes Hispalensis, was "the chief and most voluminous translator of astrological works from Arabic into Latin in the twelfth century. [His trnaslations] remained in use during the later middle ages and many of them appeared in print in early editions" (Thorndike, II, p. 73). Joachim Heller was a leading member of the circle of the celebrated Humanist and Reformer Philip Melanchthon, to whom the preface of this edition is Albohali is addressed. Show moreAbu Walid Muhammad ibis Ahmad Ibn Muhammad IBN RUSHID known as AVERROES The Commentator of Aristotle, Ibn Rushd (1126-98), was the most celebrated philosopher of Andalusia and one of the greatest of Muslim intellectuals. He was also a physician, and his medical works together with his philosophical writings were profoundly influential in Christian Europe as well as in the Islamic world. Along with Ibn Tufzyl and lbn Zuhr, Ibn Rushd enjoyed the patronage of Prince AbuYaqub Yusuf while he ruled at Seville and was appointed Qadi there. He also lived in Marrakech and Cordoba, The Kulliyyat (Generalities) is Ibn Rushds major medical work and a century later it was translated to Latin in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was often reprinted, Abu Marwãn IBN ZUHR, known as AVENZOAR Abu Marwan (c.1092-1161) was descended horn a learned Arabian family who settled in Spain early in the tenth century. Although a generation older than lbn Rushd, they became friends-and studied certain subjects together. With title-page printed in red and black and decorated with Halma's engraved Athena and Demeter/Ceres device, a woodcut tailpiece, 3 woodcut decorative initials (3 different series) and a factotum built up from cast fleurons. With the main text in Arabic with a parallel Latin translation on the facing pages, and occasional words or lines in Greek, Hebrew and Syriac. Early 19th-century boards covered with blue paper. First edition of the apocryphal Arabic Infancy Gospel, with the Arabic text on the versos and the Latin translation on the facing rectos. Sike (or Siecke), a noted orientalist from Bremen, based his edition on a manuscript that was formerly owned by Jacobus Golius, and the many notes include exerpts from the Quran and other works. The work narrates miracle stories from the first 12 years of Jesus's life, and probably originated in the fourth or fifth century. Although scholars refer to the text as the "Arabic Infancy Gospel", it was most likely originally written in Syriac. First quires with some water stains, the title-page slightly worn and the head margin of a couple pages trimmed to (but not shaving) the running head, but still in good condition Title page printed in black and red. Title vignette: device of Halma and Van de Water, with motto "Cultior his vita est." Signatures: *-3*⁴ A-X⁴ ²A-²M⁴ (3*4 blank, P3 signed P2, ²M4 blank). First edition of the Ecchelensis translations of both works, the first published version of Books V - VII of Apollonius's Conics, which only survive in the Arabic version of Abu 'l-Fath al-Isfahani, based on the translation of Thabit ibn Qurra. Apollonius introduced the terms ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. The first four books of the Conics "probably contain little that was not alreay known ... Books V - VII seen to contain the discoveries which he himself had made" (Smith, History of mathematics, I, p. 117). These books were presumed lost (the eighth is still lost) until Borelli discovered an Arabic manuscript in the Medici library in Florence. Abraham Ecchelensis was a Maronite, born in Syria, who died in Rome 1664. He was professor of Arabic and Syriac in Rome and Paris. The Archimedes was translated from another Arabic manuscript in the Medici library, a translation from the Greek by Thabit ibn Qurra: as with the Apollonius, the Greek original of this text does not survive. First edition of one of the rarest of Champier's early medical works, published between 1509 and 1515 in Lyons and unknown to Allut (Etude Biographique & Bibliographique sur Symphorien Champier, Lyons, 1859). Champier, physician, surgeon, humanist and chronicler, wrote many and various books, amongst them the first important history of medicine, De medicinae claris scriptoribus in quinque partibus tractatus (Lyons, 1506). The very rare first edition of the major independents works of Umar al-Tabari, on genethlialogy and astrological interrogations, and the only works of his to be translated into Latin and published in the West. They were "repeatedly quoted by Arabic and Latin writers, and esteemed second only to the work of Mashallah and Albumasar. One point of value was probably the presentation of the doctrines of Dorotheus [of Sidon]" (Carmody). The Arabic version of Dorotheus was due to Omar Tiberiadis. The allegorical woodcut shows Jupiter enthroned presiding over Satrun and Mars, surrounded by clouds, the signs of the zodaic interspersed in the design, the sun and the moon in the top corners. Abu Marwan Abdul Malik Ibn Zuhr (1113- 62 or 1199) was known to mediaeval Europe as Avenzoar and Abhomeron, and came of an illustious Arabian family who setteled in spain earlyin the tenth century. he was born at sevilee. and studied medicine by his father (who held the Ca"nn of Avecenna in small esttem) and achieved great fame as a physician in spain & North Africa. One of the Foremost thinkers of islam, he was opposed to astrology and medicine mysticism; the mysticism tha he was opposed to may be said to have survived until recent times. and his exemplified in the dying decleration of a vererinary surgeon who when pressed for the secret of his success in surgery said; " i biles my tools" Avnzoar who took a great intrest in materia medica and pharmacy, was opposed to logical distinctions" (Donald Campbell " Arabian Medicine and its infuluance on the Middle ages" pp 90-91) "Ibn Zuhr was the first to write acareful description of mediastinal abcess from which he probably suffered. He describes pericarditis, both wet and dry, and diffrentiates them from other lung conditions. while in jail he wrote a careful description of cancer of the stomach from wich his cell mate was suffering" (kahairallah, A." outline of Arabic contributions to medicine" pp 126) Ibn Zuhr's works were translated to latin and were printed repeatedly. His great influance over medieval Europe is seen from his great influance over Arnold of villanova and from his adoption as a text-book in the universities of Europe for several centures.
