Floriano interpr. First Latin edition of this celebrated work on African geography by the Islamic scholar Hasan ben Muhamed el-Wazzan-ez-Zayyati (1485-1552), better known under his Latin name Johannes Leo Africanus. His work long remained the principal source of information on the geography of Africa in general and the Sudan in particular. It is assumed that Leo wrote his description of Africa directly in Italian, though he certainly relied also on Arabic notes, some of which he might have composed while travelling in Northern Africa. The original Italian edition appeared in the famous series Navigationi et Viaggi, published at Venice in 1550 by Giovanni Battista Ramusio. The work was soon translated into Latin, French (1556), English (1600), and Dutch (1665). The present Latin edition of 1556, prepared by Johannes Florianus, rector of a grammar school in Antwerp, was widely used by European scholars until the late 19th century. - Some faint browning and foxing at places, ties lacking. First edition of this late sixteenth-century commentary and Latin version of al-Farghani's 'Elements', Kitab al-Jawami, based by the translator, Jacob Christmann, on Jacob Anatoli's Hebrew version of the Arabic text. "The influence of the Elements on medieval Europe is clearly attested by the existence of numerous Latin manuscrips in European libraries. References to it in medieval writers are many, and there is no doubt that it was greatly responsible for spreading knowledge of Ptolemaic astronomy, at least until this role was taken over by Sacrobosco's Sphere. But even then the Elements of Alfraganus continued to be used, and Sacrobosco's Sphere was clearly indebted to it. It was from the Elements (in Gerard's translation) the Dante derived [his] astronomical knowledge" (DSB). Arcolani's is of one of the most important commentaries on that part of the Canon on fevers, itself one of the most widely studied sections of the greater work (required to be studied in the University of Bologna by a statute of 1405). First published in 1489, this was also the most frequently reprinted commentary, appearing for the last time so late as 1685 in Padua. "If the number of commentaries is any guide, the most highly valued of all the parts of the Canon used in teaching practica was Book + especially its first section of fevers ... The earliest known Latin commentary on a part of the Canon is on this section (Siraisi). Arcolani's commentary is here printed with two Latin versions of Avicenna's text, the translation of Gerard of Cremona (the text which Arcolani knew), and the translation of Andrea Alpago as corrected by Benedictus Rinius.
