Gorgeous example of Ortelius' two sheet map of Egypt, extending from the Cataracts to the source of the Nile. This remarkable two sheet map first appeared in 1584 and was replaced by a single sheet map in the 1587 French edition. However, in 1592, the map was re-issued in an edition of only 525 copies. In this edition only, there is a text change on the map, where the word "tribu" is correctly spelled in the 5 line annotation below and slightly to the right of the inset map (line 5, word 3). The map is dedicated to the humanist and medical doctor Scipio Fabio from Bologna. One of the most decorative and dramatic of maps prepared by Ortelius himself. It is accurately located geographically on the southern coast of the Gulf. However the island of Tyllo (Tylos/Bahrain) that should be across from Catara is too Far East near the straits of Hormuz, this map Boundaries are shown as spotted line, Mountains are represented as slabs and shaded. They have a double outline, perhaps an unsuccessful attempt to show the thickness of the slab. The indentures of the coastline, the lines of rivers and outlines of the mountains have a characteristic semi-circular appearance. Names are in Roman type. Nomenclature is approximately the same as the 1478 edition. The engraver is unknown, but M.A.Hind has suggested Rosseli. In the British Museum copy the map was printed in two halves, but these have been joined and the map refolded. He used details brought back by numerous voyagers to compile information on the entire region. The shape of the Arabian Peninsula, including the whole of Arabia, is far more accurate than of earlier maps. Julfaf (now called Ras al Khaimah) is indicated for the first time. The arrowhead-shaped Qatar peninsula, called catura, can be clearly distinguished. It is located in the midst of an oyster-bed represented by small pearl-dots. Italian text on verso, it also provides more information than the standard maps. The Qatar peninsula south east of Bahrain (Baharam) can be clearly distinguished. The sea monster was not shown on the 1548 Map. This map is published in 1561 and reprinted in 1562, 1564 and 1574 and completely reworked for Geographia di Claudio Tolemeo in 1598-1599. Show moreAbraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a Flemish cartographer and central figure at the pinnacle of Dutch cartographic science during the Age of Discovery. He was famously the first to publish a printed collection of maps with the title of atlas. A very colorful map with a lot of detail and great deal of text depicting the land of Tartary which was the medieval name for north and central Asia from the Caspian Sea to the Pacifica Ocean. This is one of the earliest maps to show the Bering Strait between Asia and America (here given as the "Stretto di Anian") Relief shown pictorially and with hachures A map of Tartary, and some parts of China, America and Europe.
