The daughter of the Royal Navy Captain Edward Scobell (1783–1825), she traveled to Spain, Italy, Sicily, and the East. published Sketches in Spain, The Holy Land, Egypt, Turkey, and Greece in 1841. In 1844 she was in Cairo with her husband, the British Member of Parliament Daniel Higford Davall Burr (1811–1885), and subsequently visited Syria, Jerusalem, and Constantinople. She also accompanied the renowned English politician, archaeologist, and cuneiformist Austen Henry Layard (1817–1894) in his travels in Egypt and Turkey. She mainly composed watercolors. Her watercolors were done in vivid colors and great detail, especially costumes and architectural features. In contrast, the lithographs based on her works follow the technique and aesthetics of the time and render the views somewhat hazily. pl. 1 Street leading to El Azhar, Grand Cairo. -- pl. 2 Gateway of a Bazaar, grand Cairo. -- pl. 3 Mosque of Sultan Hassan. -- pl. 4 Interior of Hareem, Cairo. -- pl. 5 The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx, Grezeh from the South. -- pl. 6 Our room in the Armenian Convent in Jerusalem. -- pl. 7 Court before the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem, at Easter time. -- pl. 8 The Missr Tcharsky (Egyptian Market) Constantinople. -- pl. 9 From the Parthenon looking to the West. Show moreThis miniature portrait of a nobleman holding a falcon and remains of its prey (the bird's legs are held in the man's left hand) was part of an album of small court portraits prepared for Akbar I (1542-1605) Emperor of Hindustan. Portraits provided the emperor with a visual record of the members of his court. The work is attributed to the Indian miniaturist Basawan, active as a royal artist at the court of the Mughal Empire between 1556 and 1600. The miniature was later enlarged for an album prepared for Nūr-ud-dīn Muhammad Salīm (1569-1627), the future Jahāngīr, Mughal Emperor of India from 1605 to 1627.
