Fifty of the hundred plates are dedicated to horses, including many of Arabian stock, such as Hamdani Semri, Jussuf, etc. Includes an autograph letter signed by the publisher to the Agricultural College of Berlin (Budapest, 10 Sept. 1899, 1 p. 4to), requesting the return of a specimen publication and soliciting a firm order (which apparently did follow). In perfect condition; only the cardbox box housing the volume shows signs of wear. Very rare. Date of publication at head of title. At head of title: 1896-Iki ezredéves állatkiállitások emléke. T.p. within red frame. Each leaf of illustration is preceded by a leaf of descriptive text in each of the four languages. Bound in gilt-stamped green cloth; gilt-stamped coat of arms on front cover; patterned endpapers. Show moreCollection of four full-length seated portrait of distinguished people, such as a man from Mecca - identified as Daud ibn Sulaiman Abu al-Faraj -, muezzins - one of them described as a senior muezzin member of the dynasty descendant of Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, the first Muslim born at Medina after the hijra - and traders from Mecca and Jeddah. Photographs were probably taken in Mecca between 1884 and 1887 by Snouck Hurgronje and by the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s). The negatives had handwork applied: the original backgrounds have been substituted completely except for the carpets. Title and date from item. The print is likely to have been drawn after a photograph - or a series of photographs - of the same view taken by the Meccan doctor and photographer al-Sayyid ʻAbd al-Ghaffar (active in 1880s) between 1886 and 1887. Mentioned in the image are the office of the Qadi, the fortress on Jabal Hindi (or Quaiqian Mountain), the building housing the Zamzam well, the Minbar, the Maqam Hanafi, the Maqam Malik and Maqam Hanbali. An additional note states that the steps to the Kaaba and the Maqam Ibrahim, which is also the Maqam Shaf'i, are obscured from view by the Zamzam building. Title and date from item.
