Arcolani's is of one of the most important commentaries on that part of the Canon on fevers, itself one of the most widely studied sections of the greater work (required to be studied in the University of Bologna by a statute of 1405). First published in 1489, this was also the most frequently reprinted commentary, appearing for the last time so late as 1685 in Padua. "If the number of commentaries is any guide, the most highly valued of all the parts of the Canon used in teaching practica was Book + especially its first section of fevers ... The earliest known Latin commentary on a part of the Canon is on this section (Siraisi). Arcolani's commentary is here printed with two Latin versions of Avicenna's text, the translation of Gerard of Cremona (the text which Arcolani knew), and the translation of Andrea Alpago as corrected by Benedictus Rinius. Apollonius introduced the terms ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. The first four books of the Conics "probably contain little that was not alreay known ... Books V - VII seen to contain the discoveries which he himself had made" (Smith, History of mathematics, I, p. 117). These books were presumed lost (the eighth is still lost) until Borelli discovered an Arabic manuscript in the Medici library in Florence. Abraham Ecchelensis was a Maronite, born in Syria, who died in Rome 1664. He was professor of Arabic and Syriac in Rome and Paris. The Archimedes was translated from another Arabic manuscript in the Medici library, a translation from the Greek by Thabit ibn Qurra: as with the Apollonius, the Greek original of this text does not survive. The woodcuts show allegories of the planets and the zodiac, illustrating this astrological florilegium. - First 3 ff. show a faint brownstain; otherwise only very insignificantly browned. Giovanni Colle's main claim to fame is to have published the first definite description of a blood transfusion in Methodus facile parandi incunda tuta et nova medicamenta, Venice, 1628 (Garrison-Morton 2011). In 1784 Santini sold the plates to M. Remondini, whose name appears on this particular example, indicating that this is the second state of the map. "P. 11." Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore, was an English nobleman. He lived in Istanbul between 1763 and 1764. He travelled to the East in the company of artist Fr. Smith, whose drawings illustrated Lord Baltimore's editions. In 1768, he was charged with rape, and although he was acquitted, left England in the face of public hostility. Reaching Naples in July or August 1771, Calvert died there on 14 September. The collection was probably assembled by the Italian engraver Carlo Nolli, to whose work the rest of the plates are related.
